The original RODE VideoMic quickly beat out the Sennheiser MKE300 to become the choice for an industry standard on-camera shotgun. We here at the DVeStore have tested all of the on-camera mics on the market (we even helped develop a couple) and can say that without a doubt that the new RODE VideoMic pro has got 'em all beat. How? It took awhile for a simple question to be asked, "How can we clean up the sound of the mic?" Well, even with a high quality microphone capsule, we had another problem down the signal chain. The output levels of all these inexpensive mics was far too low, so when a camera's noisy pre-amps boosted up the levels, the sound quality became subpar.
Introducing the RODE VideoMic Pro with +20dB gain control. You might not think that it would make a difference, but boy does it ever. On our Canon 5D Mark II DSLR, we were able to manually set the audio levels at 1 tick over 0, crank up the mic to +20dB and pick up clean audio from 5 feet away. When I say clean, I mean noise free, distortion free. The RODE VideoMic Pro also fits superbly on today's smaller camcorders and DSLR's. It's a perfect match.
The RØDE VideoMic Pro raises the bar set by the original RØDE VideoMic, by combining broadcast quality audio with an ultra compact and lightweight ergonomic design.
Incorporating new features specific to high end video, the VMP also evolves many of the features that have made the VideoMic so successful. Noise transference has been significantly reduced using both a revised, more elegant shock mounting system and a lightweight premium cable.
What's in the Box:
Canon 5D Mark II owners be sure to download the latest firmware which allows you to manually adjust the audio. The "one or two ticks from the bottom" setting seems to be a good match with the VMP at +20dB.
Canon T2i owners. Consider using Magic Lantern to disable AGC and manually adjust your levels to approximately 16 of Analog and 0 Digital.
Panasonic GH2 owners - please use the search box for "Videomic Pro" - we have a special bundle with a Free 3.5 to 2.5mm adapter.
Please be sure to look at the RODE Deadcat as option if you will be in windy situations.
Note that DVeStore also offers several RODE Videomic Pro kits compete with cables and boom poles!
